Loving the Landing

Something I have learned about myself over the years of travel? I appreciate, and need, time to re-enter my daily life.

While I can “push through” and jump right back in, I find it MUCH nicer when I can facilitate some ease. I travelled home on a Friday so I could have a weekend to connect with Mike and recover.

I was short on sleep and desperate for clean laundry, so a slow Sunday was exactly what I needed.

My time in Colombia continues revealing its teachings, and I need spaciousness in order to be hear the lessons.

Expansive Experiences

I’ve had SO many adventures since last writing you. 😍

Mariana and I left the mountains, and the cooler temperatures, for the coast (and the heat!) of Santa Marta . . . connecting with the the other women participating in the retreat.

From Santa Marta, we all piled in for a drive, and then a boat ride, to our destination in the Tayrona National Park where we would spend the next four days.

Now, Mariana and I are enjoying the vibrant and colorful life in Cartagena.

Practicing Adaptability
Loving it ALL

Hola from Cartagena!

Sometimes it’s funny what gets lost in translation.

Mariana promoted her yoga retreat on Instagram. The gorgeous photos had me hooked, and I wanted in! The timing was great because it would serve as a bookend to my busy season of outdoor teaching. My promise to visit her had extended into its eighth year, so what could be better than joining her on retreat?

Going to additional yoga teacher trainings are expensive, so I can’t always gift myself those expansive experiences. But, this would be a yoga immersion, time with a dear friend, and I would finally have the opportunity to see some of her beautiful country.

I messaged that I wanted to participate, and that settled it.

Then, summer season in Saugatuck took over..
Honestly?
We barely spoke before it was time for me to board a plane from Grand Rapids.

Confessions:
  • I do not speak Spanish 😔
  • I did not take the time to translate the details of Mariana’s retreat. I fully fell for the gorgeous photos, and I trusted it all because . . . it’s Mariana! 🥰
  • I did not do my homework about the places I was coming to visit. If Mike and I were planning a trip to Colombia, and we did not know anyone in country, we would have geeked out on research beforehand. However, the fact that I was immediately being scooped up by a Colombian, and would be shepherded by her the entire time, gave me such peace of mind I hardly looked up a thing. 🧐

Realizations:
  • For our flight to Santa Marta, we could only bring a light carry on and a personal item. I arrived in Bogota with a checked suitcase. If you’ve spent time moving around the world with me, you know I STRUGGLE to travel light. 😉
  • The yoga retreat was in a stunningly beautiful National Park where we were completely off-the-grid for four days. Being far away from home, and then seeing all cellular and WiFi disappear was something I had to settle into. 😌
  • I have spent time backpacking, camping, and being off-grid before, so this wasn’t completely unfamiliar territory. However, salt water showers and heat that makes your lightest summer pajamas feel like oppression? Rather new territory for me! 😅
  • Mariana is both passionate, and knowledgeable, about food. She told me the Vegan meals throughout the retreat would be spectacular, nourishing, and delicious. She completely undersold how amazing the food really was! I don’t know how Marie Nöelle, and her beautiful daughter Naranjan, created such incredible feasts? Especially in such a remote location?! The variety! The care! The textures and flavors! So, so nourishing.

I have SO much more to share about all that I have experienced here. I can’t wait to tell you a few more stories, show you some more photos, and fill you in on my takeaways from being in Colombia.

But, for now . . . I have to soak up every minute of my time that’s left. I’ll definitely be eating more arepas and drinking more juices. I literally started a dictionary of new fruits I have tried since arriving here, it’s incredible!

With all that’s going on in the world right now, I’m SO grateful for this adventure. Meeting people from a different culture, trying new foods, learning a bit of history. being curious about customs . . . it’s an important part of the knowing that we  all share this planet, and we should love one another . . . because life is challenging enough.

Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti

♥️ m

P.S. If all goes according to plan, my first class offering in Michigan will be  Saturday @ the Saugatuck Yacht Club. 9:00 - 10:00 A
I hope you can join me! 💗

Reflections

I was super nervous when I went to my 200-hour yoga teacher training. I did mine as a full-on-immersion: 21-days at the Himalayan Institute with Kia Miller.

Would I be able to physically handle the training? Would I love the teacher I had chosen to study with?  Would I connect with the other yogis in the training  group?

Making that trek and that commitment were HUGE steps for me. Steps forward, and the best steps I have taken.

A love letter to sisterhood
And BIG love for Colombia

Hi from Bogota!

At that very first teacher training, I met Mariana.
I understood almost immediately I had gained a lifelong friend.

Since then, Mariana and I have travelled far and wide to continue our teacher training together.

Want to learn more about what is involved in yoga teacher training?
Perhaps a future newsletter will offer an inside peak into the commitment that’s made when becoming a yoga teacher!

So far, our journey has been powerful and transformative. It’s incredible to have a deep friendship throughout the process. We support each other, grieve together, celebrate our growth, and inspire one another.

Oh, and sometimes we have disagreements . . . but mostly we LAUGH!

Mariana has been lovingly, insistently inviting me to Colombia since day one.
(Her lawyering skills are superb . . . she is super persuasive! 😉)

I am THRILLED that I have finally made good on my promise to visit.

If you’ve never been, Bogota has more people than the entire state of Michigan. And, things here are elevated. I’m hanging out at about 8700 feet right now. ⛰️

Additional stops on this initial Colombian tour will include:
  • Santa Marta | On the coast for Mariana’s 4-day yoga retreat
  • Cartagena | Can’t wait to shop and play!

I’ll be writing and sharing more from Colombia next week.
Right now, I can’t wait to dive back into the adventure of it all!

Sending love and hugs,

♥️ m

P.S. Happy New Moon + Solar Eclipse on Saturday!
Carve out a moment to pause and plant those seeds for your pathway forward.

P.P.S. My classes at Satya are continuing while I am away!
No Yacht Club yoga this Saturday, Oct. 14.

He won!
He really WON!

For myriad reasons, Mike and I ended up staying home last night Friday night. Thankfully, we were able to live-stream the ArtPrize Awards Ceremony.

When Abdoulaye won 1st place ($125,000!), we screamed so loudly that two different neighbors texted to see if we were okay. 🤣

Love this snapshot of celebration 🎉

This is wonderful, awesome. I’m so happy. I’m happy, happy, happy, happy.”

Vibrant Life Lessons
Celebrating our Connectivity

Hello beauties!

If Hollywood wrote the script, we may not even believe it.

We are over-the-top excited about Abdoulaye’s ArtPrize victory. Thank you!! Thanks to everyone who voted, sent love, bought tote bags and t-shirts, and shared in the thrill of his journey.

The prize money? Lives-changing . . . not just life-changing.
This will prize will generate positive impacts for so many people.
Here, and in Abdoulaye’s home country of Guinea.

I’m equally excited that this mural caught the attention, curiosity, and admiration of so many people! This vibrant piece combines Guinea’s national symbol (the elephant) and Abdoulaye’s favorite childhood memories (going to the beach). Together, the message is clear . . . we are all connected; we can share our wisdom and live in harmony.

And while we’re at it, why not be JOYFUL?! 🥰

Most affirming is how people connected with Abdoulaye and Anisa throughout this process.

Abdoulaye worked 12 hour days for 25 days on this piece.

Then, throughout the competition, he was at his mural playing music, grinning ear to ear, wrapping people up in hugs, sharing his beautiful, authentic self. Anisa was at his side. Designing, ordering, and selling merchandise. Answering so many questions. Showing up for it all.

In fact, when Abdoulaye’s name was announced, he said, “We won! We won!” 💗

Thanks for being part of the excitement,

♥️ m

P.S. If you’d like one of the new Through it All t-shirts, featuring the elephants, you can find them here.
