“The only way we can make the most of our lives is to make the most of our moments.” ~ Cleo Wade Time to Check In
Gain Clarity | Find Flow Hello friends! Last week I wrote about how each one of us contains multitudes. And, whenever possible, we should err on the side of kindness. Deciding whether or not to go to the football game had me reflecting on my own writing. I was an athlete through college. I have coached young children, middle school, high school, and college. I love most sports! Several years ago, I made the decision to no longer watch football. While it’s an unpopular decision in my household and with our families, I have enjoyed my departure from this particular sport, and I have stuck to it. But, when I heard my husband’s enthusiasm over the phone about these tickets?! (His voice sounded like he was a kid in the biggest candy store. 😉) I told him I would talk to Jen and see if she was interested. With zero hesitation, her answer was, “Heck yes! I’m in!” To round out our group of four, Mike suggested we invite our dear family friend, Evan, who is a freshman at Hope College. He is from Park City, Utah, and he can’t wait to get to a game at the Big House. Unfortunately, we were unable to make that happen for him this year, but now we had this unexpected opportunity simply handed to us. So, I took a moment and paused. I needed to get clear within. Three of my favorite people on this Earth were super excited to go to this game. I love a road trip and an adventure. I believe in getting out there and doing things because that’s one way relationships deepen and memories are created. Going to the game would go against my personal code of ethics (whether or not that code holds any logic is an entirely different discussion 🤣) I’d have to let go of several of things I was looking forward to with Jen. I value my sleep, but we would be getting home in the middle of the night after the game. We had a busy Sunday already scheduled, so we’d have to rebound quickly and continue showing up. Of course, you already know what we decided. (Go Blue! 💙) Here’s the thing. In this instance, I felt okay setting aside my self-imposed restrictions. It was worth it in order to take part in this big adventure! And, as with most things in my life, if I decide I’m going to do something, I am ALL in. The important part for me was in the pause. The brief few moments where I checked in with myself. If I said “yes” to this, I wanted to embrace the entire experience. And, I also wanted to show up fully for all the people and events we were committed to on Sunday. Once the “yes” came through, I started creating ways to sprinkle more fun into our excursion. Little details that I enjoy! Great food for our pre-game tailgate. Snacks for the late night drive home. Michigan gear for all of us. I know this example of a decision making process is specific. In the big picture of life, it does not matter whether or not we went to this game. I also fully appreciate that this example may not relate directly to you and your life, at all. But, let’s all zoom out. In the hustle of the holiday season, please gift yourself a moment, however brief, to check in. That moment to pause, and breathe, and connect with your body. I promise, it will help you get clear, find flow, and foster presence. And, be kind to yourself. Yes, being disciplined can be good, but not just for the sake of being rigid and tough on ourselves. With fire and love, ~ m

Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.) ~ Song of Myself, 51, Walt Whitman Swear the Truth
The WHOLE Truth Beautiful beings, I want to begin today by wholeheartedly exclaiming . . . I have so, so much I am grateful for! It’s entirely true. And, it’s not the entire story. As people began arriving to my Monday morning class at Satya, there was a lot of lightheaded chatter about the Thanksgiving holiday . . . where everyone spent the day, how many people at the table, our favorite dish, etc. It was warm and uplifting. When another woman entered the room, I continued with cheer: “How was your Thanksgiving?” She shrugged her shoulders, raised an eyebrow, and emitted an exhausted groan. She was not smiling. The shift throughout the room was palpable She didn’t skip a beat and asked: “Oh, are we not being honest in here?” I love her response and applaud her authenticity. This moment was a simple, yet profound, reminder of something I’ve been giving a lot of thought lately: how jarring the juxtapositions in life can be. At the top, I told you the sweet version of the story of cooking with my niece. The smiley photo verifies my joy, and it is the truth. What’s missing is the fact that I really had a difficult time summoning the bandwidth and the energy to gather, and transport, all those ingredients. It felt difficult, and complicated, on top of everything else swirling in my life at that precise moment. I struggled to pull everything together for this complex dish. I enjoyed preparing and eating this delicious mushroom rice pilaf. Both are entirely true. For me, this simple example can be expanded to meet the complexities of living in today’s world. My day to day life, in so many ways, is lovely. And yet, I have struggles that are very real. Expanding outwards, how can our day to day life be joyful when there is so much pain, suffering, insecurity, and destruction happening around us? As we head into the busyness of the holiday season, let’s each remember to pause. Breathe. Give ourselves a moment to feel into how we are doing. To ground down and be supported by the earth. That way we can better rebound and rise. Let’s set our hands on our heart, tuning into the frequency of our heart space, so we can better meet the moment from a place of coherence. Let’s rest. And allow ourselves to be renewed. And let’s remember we don’t ever know what’s fully happening in another’s life. So, when in doubt, let’s lead with love. Go with grace. And err on the side of kindness. Every single one of us contains multitudes. So much gratitude for each one of you, ~ m P.S. The Winter Solstice Yoga event is ON! “If you think you are enlightened, spend a week with your family.” ~ Ram Dass Strengthening Gratitude
Connections to Others | Compassion for Self Beautiful yogis, No matter how you are spending this day, I hope you can take a moment to truly pause and deepen into gratitude. Turns out, practicing gratitude means just that . . . gratitude is something we need to practice. In other words, living a life of greater gratitude is a skill that each one of can develop. Why does it matter if we live a life full of gratitude? Repeatedly, research shows that feeling grateful has a positive impact on your mental health and quality of life. Its practice is also a way to love yourself more. “If your compassion does not include yourself it is incomplete.”JACK KORNFIELD For those of you who practice in person with me, you know I am a huge advocate of bringing our entire beings onto the mat. The parts of us that are joyful, and excited, and kind, and loving. And, the parts that are impatient, and exhausted, and distracted, and defeated. It’s important the we allow ourselves to feel ALL the feelings. Not just try and float around in positivity. Awareness of how we’re truly feeling helps us better understand, and communicate, what we need. Challenges and stress are part of daily life. That’s not going to change. But, what we can change is how we respond to, and move through, those moments. If we can turn our attention, our energy, our focus, into what we’re grateful for, that helps shift us out of anxiety, fear, and struggle. I love that smart people study these things! Science knows gratitude is good for the body in a multitude of ways. And, when we strengthen our gratitude muscle, we more easily connect to others, and we are gentler with ourselves. Deep gratitude for each one of you, and remember . . . when all else fails, try skipping! 😍 ~ m P.S. Registration is now open for the highly anticipated Winter Solstice Yoga event! Please join Teresa and I at the Saugatuck Yacht Club on my favorite night of the year: Thursday, December 21 | 6:30 - 8:00 PM. “As long as I’m alive, I will continue to try to understand more because the work of the heart is never done.” ~ Muhammad Ali Leveling Up Our Routines
Enhancing Our Self Care Hello friends! Maybe some of it is the empathy I feel after spending time with the teachers at Holly High School? Perhaps that in combination with my studio class this week when someone requested that we “release grief?” It definitely is the horror and tragedy of the daily news. There are a lot of challenges surrounding us, and I feel the heaviness of this time that we are in. Regardless of the specifics for any one of us, the struggles are real. While there are many pathways of active self-care, today I want each of us to pause. And then, remember some of the simple ways to release, reboot, and be revitalized. Reminder: we have to re-source ourselves in order to be a resource for others. It’s vital we take some moments to tune into how we’re doing. From there, we can determine steps forward from a place of enhanced calm and clarity. I’m a big proponent of our self-care routines being just that . . . routine. In other words, we want some things built into our daily lives that are relaxing, nourishing, and empowering. These things don’t need to be complicated, or difficult. In fact, I think routines are more likely to take root when they are delightful! One way to up level your self-care is to piggy back on routines you already have established. What do you already do automatically each day?
Okay, great. You have ideas of things you do daily. Some with very little thought and incredible regularity. So, what can you add into those well-worn grooves that enhances your own well-being?
These are just a few examples of simple things. Notice, they don’t cost anything. And, when you build them into your existing routines, they can begin to happen automatically, effortlessly. This is one way we can continue to support ourselves and to lift ourselves up. My advice? Have fun with it! Create what works for you and explore what you truly delight in. So much gratitude for November sunshine and for each one of you, ☀️ ~ m P.S. Mark your calendars and be sure to join me! On Winter Solstice, Thursday, December 21, Teresa Van Eyk and I will be hosting a special yoga event at the Saugaqtuck Yacht Club: 6:30 - 8:00 P.M. Details and registration coming soon!

“Starting each day, early morning for me, with practice sets me up with a beautiful container. The movement sparks energy and creativity.” ~ Rhoda Thurston Lewis Tangible Results
Some of you know I am a bit of a sponge; I LOVE learning. And, if you love learning, it’s a beautiful time to be alive! While there are plenty of downsides to this age of technology, I appreciate having easy access to all kinds of information. Truly, I don’t know who some of these people are making YouTube videos teaching me how to replace the lights in my refrigerator?! But, THANK YOU! 😉 I also understand there’s a HUGE difference between quickly answering or solving something by looking it up online . . . and truly KNOWING something. Believe me, I was pretty shocked (and a bit proud!) when I successfully changed the light panel in my fridge! However, I am not about to claim I know how to repair kitchen appliances. 😅 So, how do we go about truly learning something? Learning something so that it is fully integrated into our body and our being? This kind of learning, this knowing, is completely different for me. When I reach this point of integration, I know I have the learning within me. This means I can access it whenever it is needed. I don’t have to look it up, or struggle; the knowledge is there. I think of this knowing as building my toolkit. I have the correct tool I need, whenever I need it. Yoga has been a day by day dedication to building my toolkit. My toolkit helps me alleviate stress, lessen anxiety, and regulate emotions, The tools in my kit have also improved my sleep, increased my sense of calm, enhanced my clarity, cultivated deeper connections, and raised my levels of gratitude and joy. When life gets messy, and complicated, I am SO grateful I have this knowing in my body and my being. It’s empowering to know I can reach into my toolkit and access what I need to help me through. This is the why behind my daily practice. The rewards are tangible. And oh-so-worthwhile. I hope you will join me for your own 40-day, at home, yoga immersion. Why not commit to the same short practice (approximately 20 minutes) every day and see what happens? You’ll also receive daily support from me via email and audio slide to deepen the experience and stay on track. The webpage is packed with information ✨ Please join me & Elevate Daily Life ✨ We get started Sunday, November 12 and registration closes soon 😍 Sign up with a friend and receive a special discount 💕 Peace, light, and love, ~ m

“Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born” ~ Anais Nin Practicing Adaptability
Loving it ALL Hola from Cartagena! Sometimes it’s funny what gets lost in translation. Mariana promoted her yoga retreat on Instagram. The gorgeous photos had me hooked, and I wanted in! The timing was great because it would serve as a bookend to my busy season of outdoor teaching. My promise to visit her had extended into its eighth year, so what could be better than joining her on retreat? Going to additional yoga teacher trainings are expensive, so I can’t always gift myself those expansive experiences. But, this would be a yoga immersion, time with a dear friend, and I would finally have the opportunity to see some of her beautiful country. I messaged that I wanted to participate, and that settled it. Then, summer season in Saugatuck took over.. Honestly? We barely spoke before it was time for me to board a plane from Grand Rapids. Realizations:
I have SO much more to share about all that I have experienced here. I can’t wait to tell you a few more stories, show you some more photos, and fill you in on my takeaways from being in Colombia. But, for now . . . I have to soak up every minute of my time that’s left. I’ll definitely be eating more arepas and drinking more juices. I literally started a dictionary of new fruits I have tried since arriving here, it’s incredible! With all that’s going on in the world right now, I’m SO grateful for this adventure. Meeting people from a different culture, trying new foods, learning a bit of history. being curious about customs . . . it’s an important part of the knowing that we all share this planet, and we should love one another . . . because life is challenging enough. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti ♥️ m P.S. If all goes according to plan, my first class offering in Michigan will be Saturday @ the Saugatuck Yacht Club. 9:00 - 10:00 A I hope you can join me! 💗
“Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born” ~ Anais Nin A love letter to sisterhood
And BIG love for Colombia Hi from Bogota! At that very first teacher training, I met Mariana. I understood almost immediately I had gained a lifelong friend. Since then, Mariana and I have travelled far and wide to continue our teacher training together. Want to learn more about what is involved in yoga teacher training? Perhaps a future newsletter will offer an inside peak into the commitment that’s made when becoming a yoga teacher! So far, our journey has been powerful and transformative. It’s incredible to have a deep friendship throughout the process. We support each other, grieve together, celebrate our growth, and inspire one another. Oh, and sometimes we have disagreements . . . but mostly we LAUGH! Mariana has been lovingly, insistently inviting me to Colombia since day one. (Her lawyering skills are superb . . . she is super persuasive! 😉) I am THRILLED that I have finally made good on my promise to visit. If you’ve never been, Bogota has more people than the entire state of Michigan. And, things here are elevated. I’m hanging out at about 8700 feet right now. ⛰️ Additional stops on this initial Colombian tour will include:
I’ll be writing and sharing more from Colombia next week. Right now, I can’t wait to dive back into the adventure of it all! Sending love and hugs, ♥️ m P.S. Happy New Moon + Solar Eclipse on Saturday! Carve out a moment to pause and plant those seeds for your pathway forward. P.P.S. My classes at Satya are continuing while I am away! No Yacht Club yoga this Saturday, Oct. 14.
“I can’t believe this. This is my dream. I can’t believe this. This is wonderful, awesome. I’m so happy. I’m happy, happy, happy, happy.” ~ Abdoulaye Conde, speaking to reporters while receiving his trophy Vibrant Life Lessons
Celebrating our Connectivity Hello beauties! If Hollywood wrote the script, we may not even believe it. We are over-the-top excited about Abdoulaye’s ArtPrize victory. Thank you!! Thanks to everyone who voted, sent love, bought tote bags and t-shirts, and shared in the thrill of his journey. The prize money? Lives-changing . . . not just life-changing. This will prize will generate positive impacts for so many people. Here, and in Abdoulaye’s home country of Guinea. I’m equally excited that this mural caught the attention, curiosity, and admiration of so many people! This vibrant piece combines Guinea’s national symbol (the elephant) and Abdoulaye’s favorite childhood memories (going to the beach). Together, the message is clear . . . we are all connected; we can share our wisdom and live in harmony. And while we’re at it, why not be JOYFUL?! 🥰 Most affirming is how people connected with Abdoulaye and Anisa throughout this process. Abdoulaye worked 12 hour days for 25 days on this piece. Then, throughout the competition, he was at his mural playing music, grinning ear to ear, wrapping people up in hugs, sharing his beautiful, authentic self. Anisa was at his side. Designing, ordering, and selling merchandise. Answering so many questions. Showing up for it all. In fact, when Abdoulaye’s name was announced, he said, “We won! We won!” 💗 Thanks for being part of the excitement, ♥️ m P.S. If you’d like one of the new Through it All t-shirts, featuring the elephants, you can find them here. |
